Glomma Classic

About the Venue

The stretch of the lower Glomma between the Vamma dam near Askim and Sarpsborg is one of the most interesting predator fisheries in Østfold. The river changes character here from a wide, slowly flowing channel to deep pools, oxbows and floodplains forming the Mingevannet and Vestvannet system. Over 29 fish species have been recorded in this section, making the Glomma one of the most species-rich fisheries in Norway.

Characteristics:

• Wide river with variable current.
• Deep holes below narrows and near islands.
• Expansive bays and calm floodplains in Mingevannet and Vestvannet.
• Numerous reed beds, underwater meadows and vegetation edges.
• Hard flats, rocky strips and steep drops along the main channel.
• Strong influence of water levels and hydropower plant operations.

Mingevannet

Mingevannet is a lake-like widening of the western arm of the Glomma, stretching from the river's split into two main channels down to the Trøsken bridge. It features calmer water, abundant vegetation and extensive shallows. It is one of the best pike fishing spots in the region, especially in spring and early summer.

Vestvannet

Vestvannet is connected to Mingevannet and forms a vast, calm floodplain of the Glomma. The water exchange depends mainly on river flow. Numerous bays, islands and reed beds create ideal conditions for large pike and perch. Vestvannet is also known as an important spawning ground for many fish species.

Venue and Base

The competition takes place on the Glomma river from the Vamma dam (Askim) downstream to Sarpsfossen, including the Minge and Vestvannet waters.
